Adani Enterprises‘ subsidiary Kutch Copper has commenced the first phase of its $1.2bn copper manufacturing plant in Mundra, Gujarat, India.
This move marks billionaire Gautam Adani-led Adani group’s entry into the metal sector and is anticipated to lessen India’s reliance on imported copper and support the country’s energy transition.
The initial phase of the facility is designed to produce 0.5 million tonnes per year of refined copper. Plans are in place to reach a full-scale capacity of 1Mt by FY29 (March 2029).
Upon completion of the second phase, Kutch Copper, with 1 million tonnes per annum, will be the world’s largest single-location custom smelter, benchmarking ESG performance standards while leveraging state-of-the-art technology and digitalisation.
Besides, the project is expected to create 2,000 direct and 5,000 indirect employment opportunities.
